RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
